TREND - PERMANENT WAVE

In the 80s, practically no one could ignore the perm. Voluminous curls were all the rage and then disappeared from the scene for a while. But the perm is currently experiencing a fabulous revival. It brings variety to hairstyle trends and makes it possible for women with straight hair to have full, curly hair without having to put curlers in their hair every day. Of course, it has been given a few updates so that it looks more modern and contemporary. Today, people tend to go for large curls, which makes the overall look more natural. Since it is a semi-permanent treatment that lasts until it grows out again, it makes styling easier in the morning.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A PERMANENT WAVE?

The perm was developed in the 1930s and is based on a chemical process. But of course different products are used today than back then. Basically, the perm is worked into the hair in two phases. In phase 1, a special perm lotion is used. This is intended to soften the sulphur bridges in the hair so that the shape of the hair can be changed. The hairdresser uses curlers for this. These can be of different sizes. The hair is first divided into strands. In phase 2, an oxidizing agent fixes the new curls. Hydrogen peroxide is usually used. Immediately after the treatment, the curls are very defined. Over the next two weeks, they will sag a little and lose their elasticity until they finally find their final shape. A well-done perm lasts about two to three months. Of course, the actual lifespan always depends on how quickly your hair grows.

IS IT HARMFUL FOR YOUR HAIR?

Since it is a chemical treatment, it attacks the hair structure. Possible consequences are brittle, dry and fragile hair. Therefore, intensive care after the treatment is essential. If you already have very damaged hair, you should avoid a perm. However, if you have healthy, strong hair and really want to try out what a perm looks like on you, you can usually get the health of your hair under control with good care.

HOW TO CARE FOR A PERM?

Since the treatment puts strain on the hair, shampoos and conditioners are ideal for stressed hair. The products from our Renaissance series are ideal. We also recommend our care products for curly hair. These ensure that your hair is supplied with important moisture when washed and that your curls do not lose their shine and bounce so quickly.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL HAIR LENGTH FOR A PERM?

Basically, it doesn't matter if you have short, medium-length or long hair. A perm can be done on any hair. However, you should avoid it if your hair is longer than 30 cm. Then the weight is too high and the waves will sag after a short time. Subjecting your hair to this strenuous treatment would not be proportionate in this case. If your hair is particularly long, you can create curls using a non-permanent method. Curlers and a mousse, for example, produce great results. But you can also conjure up a great head of curls with a curling iron and even a straightening iron, at least for a few hours. For those who don't have such long hair, however, a perm is an excellent option for creating curly volume for a longer period of time!

IS THE PERMANENT WAVE STILL CURRENT IN 2022?

In 2021, the perm has made a fabulous comeback and has conquered not only the catwalks of the world but also everyday life. In all likelihood, its new popularity will not wane in 2022 either. Especially in combination with short hair or bob hairstyles, you can still score points with a perm next year. But even if you have a different haircut, you can still wear the curly hairstyle well in 2022! Plus, the style goes with almost any hair color!
