TREND - PERMANENT WAVE

In the 80s, practically no one could avoid the perm. Voluminous curls were all the rage and then disappeared from the scene for a while. But the perm is currently experiencing a fabulous revival. It brings variety to hairstyle trends and makes it possible for women with straight hair to wear a full head of curls without having to put curlers in their hair every day. Of course, it has received a few updates so that it looks more modern and contemporary. Today people tend to prefer large curls, which makes the overall look look more natural. Because it's a semi-permanent treatment that lasts until it grows out, it makes styling in the morning easier.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A PERMAN WAVE?

The perm was developed in the 1930s and is based on a chemical process. But of course people use different products today than they did back then. Basically, the wave is worked into the hair in two phases. In phase 1, a special well lotion is used. This is intended to soften the sulfur bridges in the hair so that the shape of the hair can be changed. The hairdresser uses curlers for this. These can have different sizes. Beforehand, the hair is divided into strands. In phase 2, an oxidizing agent fixes the new curls. As a rule, hydrogen peroxide is used. Immediately after the treatment, the curls are strongly defined. Over the next two weeks they will hang out a little and lose their tension until they finally find their final shape. A well-done perm lasts about two to three months. Of course, the actual lifespan always depends on how quickly your hair grows.

IS IT HARMFUL FOR HAIR?

Since it is a chemical treatment, it attacks the hair structure. Possible consequences include brittle, dry and brittle hair. That’s why intensive care after treatment is essential. If you already have very damaged hair, you should avoid a perm. But if you have healthy, strong hair and really want to try out what a perm looks like on you, you can usually get the health of your hair under control with good care.

HOW TO CARE FOR A PERM WAVE?

Since the hair is stressed by the treatment, shampoos and conditioners are suitable for stressed hair. The products from our Renaissance series are ideal. We also recommend our care products for curly hair. These ensure that your hair is supplied with important moisture when washing and that your curls do not lose their shine and bounce so quickly.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMUM HAIR LENGTH FOR A PERM WAVE?

Basically, it doesn't matter whether you have short, medium-length or long hair. A perm can be worked into any hair. However, you should avoid this if your hair is longer than 30 cm. Then the weight is too high and the shafts hang out after a short time. In this case, subjecting your hair to this strenuous treatment would not be proportionate. If you have particularly long hair, you can create curls using a non-permanent method. Curlers and a mousse, for example, deliver great results. But you can also conjure up great curls with a curling iron and even a straightener, at least for a few hours. However, for anyone who doesn't have long hair, a perm is an excellent option for creating curly volume for a longer period of time!

IS THE PERMANENT WAVE STILL CURRENT IN 2022?

In 2021, the perm made a fabulous comeback and conquered not only the catwalks of the world but also everyday life. In all likelihood, their new popularity will not wane in 2022. Especially in combination with short hair or bob hairstyles, you can still score points with a perm next year. But even if you have a different haircut, you can wear the curly hairstyle well in 2022! Plus, the style goes with almost every hair color!
